(Naples, FLORIDA) - Thousands of Collier County students will have more books to read thanks to the hardworking volunteers from K is for Kids. More than 130 students of all ages staged the Sixth Annual “From the Heart” Teen Fashion Show and Silent Auction on Feb. 4th at Barron Collier High School. This year the event raised a record number of book donations thanks to the generosity of publisher Frederic Thomas USA and the family of late children’s book author Dottie Withrow, who passed away last year. The event was developed by former K is for Kids student leaders Erin Clawson and Alexis Martin in 2011. Now college graduates, the then-high school students wanted an event that would help teens earn community service hours and build awareness for the foundation. The fashion show is run entirely by student volunteers from several area high schools who serve as models, committee members, sponsorship coordinators, emcees, interns and spokespersons. In addition to earning community service hours, student participants learn leadership skills and valuable real-life work experience. They are guided in the show by K is for Kids Founder and Executive Director, Karen Clawson; BCHS business teacher, Kelly Wilson; and Tracy Gray with Five Star Talent and Productions. Younger children are also an important part of the show, appearing first so they may then join their families in the audience to watch the show and cheer on the teens. “I’ve never been so in love with the way in which students and volunteers can come together to create an event like this,” said Jose Chang, a sophomore at Gulf Coast High School, and the foundation’s youngest student leader. Chang, along with Amy Teran, a senior at Lorenzo Walker Technical High School, co-chaired the fashion show. “I’ve been working with K is for Kids for four years and this year’s fun’raiser has taught me leadership, communication, and business management.” Added Barron Collier senior, Caroline Hancock, who was one of four emcees: “The K is For Kids fashion show was a great way to help the community while at the same time doing a fun event with your friends. It allowed kids to step out of their comfort zone and helped them learn the important benefits of community service.\" Other student organizers who helped make the popular show a success were Aracely Aguilera, a senior at Lorenzo Walker Technical High; Rachelle Cavero, a junior at Lorenzo Walker Technical High; Emma Desrocher, a sophomore at Gulf Coast High; Bree Gelin, a senior at Lely High; Aditii Makwana, a sophomore at Gulf Coast High; and Sara Saintil, a senior at Lely High. Back stage, volunteers from the Paul Mitchell School-Ft. Myers donated hair and makeup services to ensure the 75 elementary, middle and high school student models looked their best as they took to the stage wearing fashions from local retailers including Cape Madras, Lux Boutique of Venetian Village, Francesca’s, Lilly Pulitzer, Lu Lu Belle, Men’s Wearhouse, Ooh La La!, PGA TOUR SUPERSTORE, Rouze, Simply Natural, Udene’s Bridal Boutique, and White House Black Market. Fashions included casual wear, sporting looks and prom attire. The evening began with a reception and silent auction, with items donated by Saks Fifth Avenue, Kay Bork, Brio Tuscan Grille, Spectacles, Lilly Pulitzer, and more. During intermission, kids and adults got to try their hand at the Hole in One Putting Contest, which was sponsored by PGA Superstore. Community relations representative, Erik Bems, said he appreciates how much work the students put in to make the event a success. “I participate in over 100 events a year in the Naples area and K is for Kids is special as it is the only event that is produced and put together solely by the kids,” Bems said. “We marvel at how organized and business oriented the students are and the leadership they exude.” After the show, Theresa Ryan said her young daughter Sierra, a student at Osceola Elementary School, was so happy, “There were many magical memories made; she loved the entire show from beginning, middle to end.” Comcast was the top sponsor of the show, which is in partnership with Barron Collier High School and in association with Collier County Public Schools. Other foundation sponsors include the Richard M. Schulze Family Foundation, Arthrex, Barnes & Noble, and GL Homes. Guests and volunteers enjoyed refreshments donated by California Pizza Kitchen and the Culinary Department of Lorenzo Walker Technical High School. Visit www.KisforKids.org to learn more.
